Energy Smart Commercial Lighting Program Reaches Smaller Communities
Sep 14 2009
A recent lighting retrofit at Baxter Auto Parts in Sisters, Oregon, is the first completed project in BPA’s Energy Smart Commercial Lighting Program pilot launched in June. Earlier this summer, the pilot was unveiled in three Northwest communities to promote installation of energy efficient commercial lighting throughout the region.
In collaboration with three utilities — Central Electric Cooperative in Sisters, Ore., Milton-Freewater City Light & Power in Milton-Freewater, Ore., and Elmhurst Mutual Power and Light in Tacoma, Wash., — BPA introduced the program through a series of workshops, events and outreach to business owners in each community.
“We’re looking for ways to best access efficiency opportunities in smaller communities,” said Ray Hartwell, BPA's lead for commercial sector energy efficiency. “This pilot is just the first step in working with local utilities to educate lighting contractors and businesses about the energy and cost savings available to them.” The events drew a total of 50 trade allies and close to 100 prospective business customers. More than 70 lighting audits have been performed to date, with several of these audits on target for installation.
